Presurgical Evaluations

A presurgical psychological screening is a risk assessment procedure to determine how psychological factors may influence a person’s surgery results. The general idea is to evaluate whether the individual is psychologically stable for the planned surgery at that time.

It is common for people to experience mental health concerns while planning surgeries, including those to address concerns such as losing weight, chronic pain, gender dysphoria, and hearing loss. Research has shown that, when treated and stabilized, mental health conditions have little to no effect on surgical outcomes.

Screening assists your doctor because it confirms that you can understand the procedure, its risks, the expectations and requirements for pre- and post- operative care. Although it may seem as though it is a hurdle that you must jump through, it can also be a useful tool for communication and keeping you safe.

Why do I need a presurgical evaluation for bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is just the beginning of a person’s weight loss journey. It can take up to two years to reach weight loss goals. Mentally preparing for surgery and adapting well following the surgery varies according to each person’s life experiences, physical and mental health conditions, and personalities.

Our bariatric evaluation services include a determination of fitness for surgery and can assist you and your surgical team in determining what combination of therapeutic help you may find useful before or after the surgery.

Potential struggles include:

  • Struggles with food obsession and addiction before surgery that become intertwined with a fear of gaining weight following surgery.
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Self-consciousness about excess skin and impatience for plastic surgery to remove or tighten skin.
  • Alcohol sensitivity – even a small amount of alcohol can cause intoxication after bariatric surgery.
