Currently, 1 in 5 mothers experience a maternal mental health disorder – such as postpartum depression – yet less than 15% receive treatment. However, we understand that it's not solely the birth mothers who may find the perinatal period difficult. All parents – birth or non-birth – may suffer from a postpartum disorder and may benefit from mental health counseling.
For parents who experience a traumatic childbirth or the loss of a child, developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression can be common. Even with normal childbirth, many parents develop postpartum depression or increased anxiety. A postpartum disorder can happen after the birth of any child – regardless of if it's your first born or your last.
Studies show that treatment is extremely effective for postpartum disorders, yet hard to get with a newborn at home. Because of this, Central Iowa Psychological Services offers virtual perinatal consultations – or telehealth "check ins" – for parents so postpartum counseling can be set up and received from the comfort of home, with your newborn and/or partner nearby.
Our team of psychologists, nurse practitioners, licensed therapists, and other behavioral health providers are specialized and trained to help all birth and non-birth parents receive the treatment they need during the perinatal period. To get started, simply request an appointment for a virtual postpartum mental health check in using the button below, during which our providers can help determine and schedule additional treatment directly if needed.
Whether you need services for yourself or a loved one, or a referral for a client, we are here to help.
